55 Years Ago Today The ‘Heidi Game’ Changed Modern TV

It was 55 years ago today when The Heidi Bowl took place. November 17, 1968, a game between the Oakland Raiders and the visiting New York Jets. The game was notable for its exciting finish, in which Oakland scored two touchdowns in the final minute to win the game 43–32, but NBC in its infinite wisdom decided to break away from its coverage on the East Coast to broadcast the television film Heidi, causing many viewers to miss the Raiders' comeback. It wound up changing the way modern television deals with live sporting events.
